Unprecedented day at Brasil Ride Bahia

For the first time in the event's history a stage is canceled

October 2022 – Due to the heavy rains that fell over the Guaratinga region, on the morning of this Tuesday, 24th, the organization of Brasil Ride Bahia 2022 decided to postpone the second stage of the ultramarathon. The race course, between Arraial d'Ajuda and Guaratinga was 128 km long.

According to Mario Roma, founder of Brasil Ride, the decision was taken to ensure the safety of athletes and work teams." The rain made it impossible to ride the course today. The region where the race would go today received 100 mm of rain during the whole night and morning. We will do one more inspection to maintain the safety of the participants and we have already monitored the forecast so that we do not have any surprises. As I always say: 'whoever goes to the sea, takes precautions on land'. That's our motto: Safety, always.”

UCI Commissaire Fred Seemann agreed with Mario Roma and gave the example of an adverse weather event he witnessed. "It was like an event I attended in Arkansas (USA). A small tornado hit the camp and destroyed part of the tents. With that, we also had to postpone a stage, for safety reasons.”

Stage - According to Mario Roma, starting tomorrow, the ultramarathon goes on. "In 12 years, the ultramarathon has never had a situation like this. It will be a different route, but we will continue with Brasil Ride, which always has surprises", he explained.

The race director, Rafael Campos, noted that the decision to postpone the race was safety and asked the participants to be careful and prudent. The track tomorrow is 57.2 Km with 711 accumulated climbing. The route is 40% singletracks, downhill sections and, despite not being so technical, roots and soil coverage make the ground tricky. Large puddles and two sections of paved road, where the Highway Police will be giving support . The starting order is in the app", he informed.

Training Routine - To face yet another stage of the Brasil Ride, even on this day off, the athletes performed training sessions to keep their bodies and minds active. The Portuguese world champion Tiago Ferreira (DMT Racing Team by Marconi) explained that they had nothing planned, so they decided to train indoors. "Early on we found out about the cancellation of the stage and the option was to do 2 hours of indoor training in two 1-hour sessions, in the morning and in the afternoon, so as not to be stuck. I also took the opportunity to rest a little more and organize my bags and stuff," he said.

Brazilian rider Gustavo Xavier (Specialized Racing BR) and the Specialized BR team preferred to do a more relaxed training on the street. "We woke up very early, at 5:50 in the morning and we had to improvise. We did a two-and-a-half-hour training session, about 70 km, at a much lighter intensity than what would be today's race. We did a physiotherapy session, some mobility exercises and took the opportunity to rest, too. I believe that depending on the athlete's characteristics, the day off can interfere in the next stage of the race, which will be a shorter stage but with high intensity, and with mud, the stage becomes more difficult", he commented.

Brazilian rider Marcella Toldi (Johny Lin / Ciclovia Rio Pinheiros) said that the day off makes her anxious, but to overcome that feeling, the athlete decided to do a light, mind stimulating workout, and rest. "I took the opportunity to review the bag, review supplements, think about the next steps and find friends. I did some asphalt training, in the rain. I'm really looking forward to race, and I trust wherever Rafael (Campos) traces the track, I’ll go. I wanted to avoid the mud because of the bike and the wear on the brake pads and the transmission, though".

Brasil Ride Bahia is sponsored by the Department of Sports,  Ministry of Citizenship, Specialized, Continental Tires, Shimano and Unidas Rent a Car, Garmin, Red Bull, HB, Squirt, and Porto Seguro and Guaratinga Municipalities. The race has the support of Full Gas, Spot, Thule, Coca-Cola, Pau Brasil National Park and Alto Cariri National Park. With the aproval of the International Cycling Union (UCI), Brazilian Cycling Confederation (CBC) and FBC (Bahia Cycling Federation). The organization is from Brasil Ride Institute.
