Around a thousand cyclists raced in Mucugê on the 7th day competing in the last stage of Brasil Ride and the race counting for Bahia State Championships.
The great champions of the 5th Brasil Ride were revealed in Mucugê, during a sunny Saturday of the 25th of October. Determinated riders finished 7 days of hard cycling over awesome trails in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia.
“Congratulations to everyone who had the courage to face the challenge even for the ones who did not finish, because in a week of riding, everything can happen. Some people did not finish, but what matter are that all of you have been warriors joining the most important Mountain Bike Marathon Stage Race in Americas, comments Mário Roma.
Brasil Ride became very important in the Olympic sport development and promotes a life experience to everyone:
“This is definitely a unique opportunity to promote the Olympic sport, at this time when there is a total focus on Olympic excellence, fighting for a medal, that’s what we want and we believe that it is really possible, so it’s satisfying to see riders with chances in the Olympic ranking”, comments João Henrique Guntzel, from High Performance National Secretary (Snear) that is part of Brazil Ministry of Sports.
In reality, riding around 600km, crossing hills and climbing almost 13 thousand meters, almost twice the high of Everest Mont (8.848m) and like the narrator “Maquininha” says “hearts all at this time”, “Sow nice, So cool, Awesome!” and that describes really well these 7 days of competition.
Superior-Brentjens Mountain Bike Racing became the great Champion of the 5th Brasil Ride, after crossing 61.8km, climbing 926m in total and winning the last stage. The total time of the winners were 26 hours, 05 minutes and 47 seconds.
“We won the stage yesterday (24th) saving 10 minutes from the second team. Today we did what we should do”, comments Hans Becking that follows Bart Brentjens tips.
It was a hard decision for the overal tittle, only 2 minutes separated 3 teams from glory: Protek Team, Caloi Elite Team and Superior-Brentjens Mountain Bike Racing.
“It’s like a reached dream. Today hearted a lot. My teammate Jiri Novak if very strong, we attacked first in the single-track however Tiago and Periklis did not want this. On the road we attacked to take the leadership and it was perfect!”, added Hans Becking.
Trek Factory Racing finished the day in second place thanks for the effords of Ricardo Pscheidt and Sergio Mantecon:
“For me this was a special competition, because I met many people during this last week, I take with me the experience and many friend that I did in these days”, describes Ricardo Pscheidt, confirming that the event is much more than a stage race.
“Catalão” (Raphael Mesquita) and Halysson Ferreira from JC bikes Team were revelation of the day winning the “Oakley Challenge” after an impressive attack on the road and in the end they managed to finish again in top 3 position.
“Thanks God we finished well. We did a suicide attack on the road to take the Oakley prize. I told my teammate that we had to concentrate in the stage so the strategy was to go full gas to try the podium. I’m happy to be on the podium with these great athletes, this is a satisfaction”, comments Catalão.
Tiago Ferreira that competes at Brasil Ride for the 4th time said: “It’s a shame that I lost the yellow Jersey in the last day, but I hope to fight for the victory on next year”.
Henrique Avancini and Sherman Trezza from equipe Caloi Elite were the best Brazilians overall, unfortunatelly they had a puncture so there was no chance left for a victory in the overall classification, however they kept the tittle as the best riders of “Americas”!
“Brasil Ride is very important for Olympic mountain bike development, besides this is a marathon stage race discipline, the UCI points counts for Olympic classification. Also this is the only race big international race in Brazil. So have a chance to ride with good and international riders,” comments Avancini that is saying good bye to Caloi and will be wearing the colors of Cannondale Factory Racing till the 2016 Olympic Games.
Women Brazilian cyclists amanaged to get the tittle of the best of Americas in Brasil Ride, the spotlighs were also to Isabella Lacerda e Érika Gramiscelli.
“I knew we could to finish well, because there was a loto f trails and we feel better on technical sessions...in the end it was all right and we are really happy about this competition,” said Érika.
The overall winner in the women’s category was Sonya Looney and Nina Baum from US, sponsored by NoTubes / Ergon that finished second in the last day.
“I’m glad I was able to finish, I’ve got sick last night, I had fever...I was up all night and I was worried how today would go. We just went out, just rode easy today and our goal was to finish today,” comments Sonya.
Mateus Ferraz and Ivonne Kraft from Niner / Shimano team won the last stage again so the German rider woman becomes 5 times winner and Mateus 4 times winner of Brasil Ride.
Other impressive result goes to Bart Brentjens and Abraão Azevedo winning the Master category and the spotlight goes to Abraão that won Brasil Ride for the 5th time:
“Bart is a great teammate. Hi is Always fast and this is the 3rd time we ride together and this our 3rd tittle,” comments Abraão that is also Master World Champion and referred about 2 titles in Brasil Ride and 1 in Cape Epic.
In the Grand Master category, the Team Konsk / Ciclorace won the title. The cyclists Heleno Borges conquered his second title, riding with Paulo Vasconcellos.
“In the national races we are oponents, but here we make a good team. I am very happy with my second title in Brasil Ride. It proves my training is working”, adds Heleno.
The most disputed category was the Corporate category, formed by three athletes competing in relay. "I had never experienced such a difficult experience on my bike, it was one of the hardest things I've ever faced in my life ... But what makes up this whole effort is the company, the friendships, the wonderful scenery," describes Caio Guatelli, professional cyclist in the 90s, which finished in second place. "Life is difficult and so here is a mirror of life, these mountains, these stones, the result is the overcoming of it. Here the lesson is overcoming. "
"It is certainly a unique experience, This is my third time in Brasil Ride and to be in my hometown is an honor for me. My two friends o four team are also children of Mucuge. Unity is strength and we showed it, "complete Jooab, from team Local Mucuge.
In “Nelore” category for athletes weighing over 90 kilos, the race debuted in style. The team "Optical Diniz", formed by Robson Souza Tavares / Josiah Jose, State of Pernambuco just won the first title ever.
