Henrique Avancini and Manuel Fumic win Brazil Ride prologue 2019, and break the record

Current ultramarathon champions Avancini and Fumic have a 51- second lead ahead of Sebastian Fini and Julian Schelb. In the female elite, winners are Letícia Cândido and Hercília Najara, 2min19 ahead of Raiza Goulão and Angelita Parra

The tenth edition of Brasil Ride started this Sunday (20), in Arraial d'Ajuda, Porto Seguro (BA), with record breakings. The prologue had about the same lenght as in previous years, but with redesigned trails to grant a more fluid ride, Henrique Avancini (BRA) and Manuel Fumic (GER), from Cannondale Factory Racing XC, started in front in search of the duo’s second win, a fact that would make the Brazilian rider the biggest champion of the event, with four wins.

Not only did Avancini and Fumic start at the front, they broke the stage record, finishing at 43min48. Top 3 duos of the day featured Sebastian Fini (DNK) and Julian Schelb (GER) from CST Sandd American Eagle MTB Racing Team in 44min39, and Tiago Ferreira (POR) and Hans Becking (NLD) from DMT Racing Team in 44min52. Among the favorites, Kristo Hynek (CZE) and Martin Stosek (CZE) from Vitalo Future Cycling PWD by Canon were seventh. Olympic champion Jaroslav Kulhavy, alongside Matous Ulman – Specialized Racing duo – were only 14th on the day after both having flats at the same time and place on the trail, and now are almost 5 minutes behind the leaders.

In search of his fourth win, Avancini evaluated the first fight in the event. "Last year the conditions were much heavier. We had a prologue with rain, which slowed the route. However, we were much better than in 2018, with the difference that, on that occasion, Fumic was predominant in our duo and this time we were balanced. We came to this edition much more balanced from the very beginning. Usually the prologue is where I feel more difficulty, and then I evolve. I'm very happy with our performance", evaluated Henrique Avancini. "We were almost a minute ahead of Fini, the rider who won this stage in the last two years. This is a good start, and shows that we are in good shape", he added.

Fumic also commented on the possibility of winning another title alongside his teammate. "I said earlier that weather conditions will play an important role in the fight for the title, and the prologue was just a taste of what is ahead. We will have brutal stages ahead. This was only 20 km, but it is great to start well in a stage race. No one saved any energy. We gave all, and hope that our effort will be enough to end the seven days with the yellow leader’s jersey", said Fumic.

Female elite - Current Brazilian Marathon (XCM) and Olympic Cross Country (XCO) champion, Leticia Cândido repeated Avancini's formula, who also holds both national titles this season, winning the stage and securing the record alongside Hercilia Najara. The Corinthians Audax / Tripp Aventura duo completed the prologue's 19.5 km in 57min11. The top 3 teams were completed by Raiza Goulão and Angelita Parra from Corinthians Audax / FSA / CBZ-7C in 59min29 and Jaqueline Mourão and Danilas Ferreira from Sense Factory Racing / Tropix in 59min33.

Stage 2 - On Monday (21) the riders start for the second stage of Brasil Ride, the longest of all, with 143 km and 2,654 m of accumulated climb. The route has different sections, compared to previous years. The first 12 km are on dirt roads, where the pelotons begin to dissolve. Then they enter the "Avatar" single track, an Atlantic Forest conservation unit, about 7 km long, in a park that is not open to the public. Following, long sections of dirt roads, wide landscapes with plenty of up and downhill, up to km 90. From then on, they enter singletracks once again, with more ascents, from where they start to see the mountains of Guaratinga. The most difficult climbs are in the last 40 km. The first finishers should be completing the stage in about 6 hours, since the stage is longer than last year.
