Geismayr and Kaess win the longest stage and reduce the gap in Brasil Ride

The fifth stage had 134 Km between Guaratinga and Arraial d'Ajuda, in Porto Seguro, with Tiago Ferreira and Roel Paulissen finishing in second, and Fabian Rabensteiner and Alexey Medvedev completing the podium

Arraial d'Ajuda (BA) - The fastest mountain bikers of the world are back to Bahia's South shore this Thursday (20), riding the longest stage in Brasil Ride 2016. The ride was 134 Km long, with 2,027 meters of climbing between Guaratinga and Arraial d'Ajuda, in Porto Seguro, the city that supports the event's seventh edition through the Convention & Visitors Bureau. This time Centurion Vaude duo Daniel Geismayr (AUT) and Jochen Kaess (GER) had a perfect day, making no mistakes at all. They won the stage in 5h00min34, with a five minute gap ahead of Tiago Ferreira (POR) and Roel Paulissen (BEL), and seven minutes ahead of the leaders in the Open category, Fabian Rabensteiner (ITA) and Alexey Medvedev (RUS).

With the result on the fifth day of the race, the gap between leaders Rabensteiner and Medvedev and runners-up Geismayr and Kaess, which was 16min43, dropped to less than ten minutes. There are still two stages to go: Olympic Cross Country (XCO), next Friday (21), starting at 10 a.m., and the final Marathon stage (XCM) in Brasil Ride, when another 1,000 athletes from all over Brazil have the opportunity to compete side by side with the stars of the sport, starting at 9 a.m.

"It was a nice stage after all we'd been through yesterday, when we had bad luck. So it was a big deal for me to win the return to Arraial d'Ajuda. I knew that we could win this stage if we finished first in the last single track. We made the right choice, got a good lead and I'm really happy with this result. We still have two more days, and everything can happen when we talk about Brasil Ride. Let's see", analyzed Daniel Geismayr.

Despite having had a bad day, San Marco Trek II duo, Rabensteiner and Medvedev, could maintain a good lead. "It was a very hard day today, very hot and a really long distance. Centurion Vaude athletes were very strong today and we had a bad day. We lost more than six minutes. It's ok, though", said Medvedev. "The day was very hard and windy, with short, but steep climbs. Kaess attacked many times, and we could keep up with them. But at some point they passed", told Fabian Rabensteiner.

For Tiago Ferreira, current world champion, and Roel Paulissen, World Champion in 2008 and 2009, it was a day for recovery, after having a bad fourth stage when they had difficulties on Guaratinga's climbs. "We tried hard to win the stage, after the horrible day we had yesterday (Wednesday), when I felt sick and ran out of water in decisive moments. I almost passed out on the trail. The strategy now is to recover some time and win stages. That's all we got for now, because we are out of the fight for the top", told Tiago Ferreira.

American Men - In the Open category, the lead is almost ten minutes, nevertheless, in the American Men category, there is a tough fight between the cyclists from the American continent. After Brazilian riders Sherman Trezza and Wolfgang Soares won the first three stages and held on to the leadership on Wednesday, on Thursday the first place of the category stayed with Ricardo Pscheid (BRA) and José Montoya (CRI), who finished in sixth overall, while Trezza and Soares finished in ninth. This way, the near two-minute gap dropped to around 50 seconds.
