Sportsmanship and a new victory for San Marco Trek II duo marked the fourth day of Brasil Ride

Leaders won again after passing Daniel Gesmayr and Jochen Kaess with mechanical problems, 5 km from the finish line

Guaratinga (BA) - People say that luck helps the greatest athletes in the decisive moments, and this is what happened this Wednesday (19) in Brasil Ride, the main MTB ultramarathon of the Americas. After the runner-ups of the GC, Daniel Gesmayr (AUT) and Jochen Kaess (GER), had lead the fourth stage for 50 Km, Kaess destroyed his rear wheel a mere 5 Km from the finish line, and the win slipped through his fingers. Lucky Fabian Rabensteiner (ITA) and Alexey Medvedev (RUS), who won the day with 4h46min01, and opened a gap of 16min43 ahead of Gesmayr and Kaess. The current two-times champion of Brasil Ride, Jiri Novak (CZE) and Hans Becking (NED) had a good stage, and completed the podium in third place.

The second Queen stage of the competition covered 85.3 Km with 2,963 m of elevation gain, with plenty of steep climbs and sportsmanship present. When German Jochen Kaess from Centurion Vaude broke his rear wheel in a cattle guard, in the final kilometers, Samuele Porro, from Trek San Marco, the same team as leaders' Rabensteiner and Medvedev, offered his wheel to Kaess, even if this was not favorable to his teammates. "Big thanks to him. It was really nice of him. There are no more words to describe it", thanked Jochen, who had a gap of over six minutes from his rivals.

For the Trek San Marco II duo, the result meant a larger gap, which went from 14 to 16 minutes. Fatigue was Rabensteiner and Medvedev's worst enemy. "The guys from Centurion Vaude were really strong today. I felt a little bit tired today, but Alexey was very strong and helped me a lot", highlighted Fabian. Today’s course was really tough, very, very hard with many steep climbs and lot of complicated parts in the forest. Racing more than 4h30 over three days in a row is very tiring", said Medvedev.

Leaders have the habit of not celebrating the rivals' misfortune: The Centurion duo was very strong. They had bad luck and this is MTB. When it happens near the finish line it's not that bad, but 5 km away, then it's a problem", said Alexey. I feel sorry for the guys from Centurion, but bad luck can happen. It was nice of Samuel doing it. For us it's ok. He did the right thing", ended Rabensteiner.

Unlike 2015, when Daniel Gesmayr had a serious accident with his duo in the penultimate stage and was left out of the competition, this year the Austrian is still alive in the fight for the title with Kaess. He had to walk some meters and Samuel gave us his wheel. That's Brasil Ride. Let's see what happens in the next stage. I feel good, but unfortunately we had bad luck today", said Daniel. "After the problem, we had to walk a lot until we got a borrowed wheel. But this is our sport and its spirit. In the beginning he helped his partners from Trek and at the end he was alone in the front and helped me", finished Kaess.

For the current two-time champions of Brasil Ride, Jiri Novak and Hans Becking, the stage served to show how prepared they are for the competition, after having had technical problems on Tuesday (18). "Today was a really hard stage. After yesterday we were disappointed, because we know we have good legs and we are fast in the downhills. Today we could prove it.", said Hans. "The big problem was my motivation. I had a struggle with my head yesterday, when the bearing in the rear wheel broke", said Jiri.

Prasied structure - Setting up a real city for the athletes in Conjunto Boa Vista Farm in Guaratinga was not an easy task. Two restaurants for 800 people, tents for everyone, seven bathrooms and restroom containers with a 112-meter well. Add to that Shimano technical assistance, the emergency room and physical therapy tent. All that is Villa Brasil Ride, the second village after Arraial d’Ajuda, in Porto Seguro and a safe and comfortable place for the participants.

Professional riders Daniel Gesmayr and Jochen Kaess, first runner-ups on the Open category, also praised the organization’s idea. "Even being different from last year, I like to be camping. Riders are much closer to each other, professionals and amateurs alike. I think it’s good, because it’s another adventure", told Gesmayr. "I have raced many races with the two options - hotel or camping - but I never chose the tents. This is my first experience, and it’s new for us. This way, all of us have the same conditions and the preparation is the same", completed Kaess.
