OLYMPIC CROSS COUNTRY ON THE THIRD DAY OF BRASIL RIDE 2014

Trek Factory Racing rider Sérgio Mantecón won the Olympic standard race that and is part of the mountain bike stage race in Chapada Diamantina - Bahia.

The best cyclists in the World determined the pace with adrenaline, power and high technical control on their bikes during the 3rd day of Brasil Ride 2014, Tuesday the 21st, in Rio de Contas (BA).

The Spanish Sérgio Mantecón, from Trek Factory Racing, partner of Ricardo Pscheidt in the competition, was the great winner on this individual stage after a big dispute against Brazilian Henrique Avancini, both are quoted as talented riders on the way for medals during Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

“It was a specific race for cross-country riders, like me for example that is looking for points to be in the Olympics in Rio 2016, and this is the type of stage I have to take the opportunity because the next stages are longer and more demanding”, comments Mantecón, considered the 6th best rider nowadays.

“This is the opportunity to race against renowned athletes in our country. We are in the middle of our Olympic cycle and this a great chance to improve riding technique, tactics and experience in race with other high performance riders,” comments Henrique Avancini that finished in 2nd position in the stage and together with Shermann still holds the best position between Brazilian riders.

This is a classic stage during Brasil Ride since 2012, and its known as an Olympic standard race, and nowadays has the commitment to support high performance athletes for the Olympic games. During the 5 laps of 6.9km and 1.205m elevation gain, the highlight was the Diocese de Livramento da Conquista church climb, where the traditional blessing of the priest on the top of the hill was welcome by the riders. In this edition, riders who did not feel safe on the technical descend of the church, had a chance to choose another route around the hill.

“Actually it was a real mountain bike track, hard and very technical, where I could make the difference,” added Mantecón.

Between the girls, Ally Stacher (Specialized) was the winner. Nina Baum and Sonya Looney, both from Notubes/Ergon team completed the podium on the 2nd and 3rd places.
Isabella Lacerda, XCO Brazilian Champion was the best Brazilian and this is her first Brasil Ride: “This is my discipline, so I ended riding well. Yesterday’s stage (Marathon) was hard however today I did better. Here is very technical, so this is a chance to prepare myself for the Olympic games and here technical level is very similar to the World Cup and World Championship. Despite I suffer a lot, I’m having fun in Brasil Ride and these points (UCI ranking) are worth and in the end  they will be very important,” said Lacerda.

Brasil Ride 2014 offers the opportunity to get 80 points in UCI (International Cycling Union) international ranking giving a chance for local riders to get necessary points “at home” for the Rio 2016 Olympic games selection. So, the organization prepared 3 technical symposiums with specialists.

On Tuesday the “Olympic Chat” was about “How to become a Olympic Champion” with Bart Brentjens (Netherlands) that discussed about the step by step to get the gold medal, considered a dream for every high performance athlete. Brentjens is considered one of the biggest names in the mountain bike scene and he won the first Olympic medal in the cross-country discipline in Atlanta 1996, also he was bronze medal in Athenas 2004.

“The incentive about the Olympic value is very important specially between the youngsters: effort, overcome, team work, “fair play” and respect to the rules are the base and this is a sport for life”, comments Javier Moracho from the Olympic athletics discipline that competed in Moscow 80, Los Angeles 84 and Seoul 88. Since his retirement Moracho adopted cycling as his new discipline. “I’m enjoying, I’ve heard about the race in Spain and for that reason I decided to come. Congratulations to all, not just because of technical level, but also for the organization and you look after athletes really well, and this is the most important,” completes Javier.

“I’m proud about the chance national riders has to dispute for a place in the Rio Olympic games, besides the support in the Olympic sport development,” added Mário Roma.
