Brasil Ride: Becking wins the Cross Country Stage and Trek San Marco II increase their lead

The return to Arraial d'Ajuda also stood out for a memorable marriage proposal on stage during the awards ceremony on Thursday (20). Saturday is the last day of Brasil Ride 2016 and sees the Marathon XCM stage take place with an additional 1,000 participants

Arraial d'Ajuda, Brazil - The 500 athletes participating in the seventh edition of Brasil Ride on Friday (21) took part in the Cross-Country Olympic stage (XCO), with four laps of an 8.6km circuit. There was a specific rule for the competition, stating that after the leader finished the race no one would be able to start another lap. The pace was intense in the first heat, with the top 60 pairs from the last five days starting first. After 1h26min17, Dutchman Hans Becking crossed the line first, followed by Fabian Rabensteiner (1h26min34) and Alexey Medvedev (1h26min34) of leading team Trek San Marco II, which meant they increased their lead from 9min55 to 13min27 over the second placed team. On Saturday (22), the last stage of the competition will be held and the XCM Marathon will bring together another 1,000 cyclists.

The first place at stage 6 was special for Hans Becking, current champion of Brasil Ride, who unfortunately had a bad start to the seventh edition with his partner Jiri Novak (CZE). After the celebration on the podium the Dutchman celebrated next to the head of the Higher-Brentjens MTB Racing Team and fellow compatriot, Bart Brentjens. "I feel great. The steep climbs suited me very well, but the temperature and the fast guys from the Trek San Marco II made it tough again. But I'm very happy after all the bad luck this week Jiri and I have been through. There’s one more day and then we can really enjoy the beach. It's good to end the race with a dip in the sea. I had a small crash and the salt water will help me.

Although they didn’t win the individual victory, Trek San Marco II still got the best double time of the day with an average of 1h 26min 34 for Fabian and Alexey. Second was Hans and Jiri with 1h27min47 and third Daniel Geismayr and Jochen Kaess in 1h30min06. "Yesterday we lost almost seven minutes of the lead. Today was a very fast and technical course. The start was very intense. Rabensteiner and I were together the entire race and the legs felt good. I'm very happy with the result", said Alexey. "The race was good. I felt good and Alexey was a great partner during the race. I had a good recovery night and I'm happy with our result. Now we have to be positive for the last stage and do everything is possible to hold on to the Yellow Jersey", said Fabian

Now the Italian-Russian duo have a 13min27 advantage over Geismayr and Kaess, with just the 75km Marathon XCM Brazil Ride to go this Saturday (22), starting at 9 am, again in Brazil Villa Ride in Arraial d'Ajuda.

Ladies - Celina Carpinteiro (POR) and Ivonne Kraft (GER) had been leading Brasil Ride since the first day, but on Friday morning Isabella Lacerda and Leticia Candide (BRA) made a stunning comeback with excellent results. While the two Brazilians completed the four laps, the European pair didn’t make the four laps and faced a 210 minute penalty (70 minutes for Celina and 140 for Ivonne). After the final average time calculation of the day, Isabella and Leticia took the lead over Celina and Ivonne, from a deficit of 33 minutes to a 38 minute advantage for the Brazilian Rockets.

"I started with the intention of giving my all to close the gap. I knew it would be technical but XCO is my speciality and I took the lead. I opened a gap and managed to keep it to until the end. The track was fantastic. The downhill at the end end gave me more desire to go as fast as possible and power down it. I'm so happy. Leticia and I had a great day and we were the only two to complete all four laps, which guaranteed us being the race leaders. Now it's pure concentration, because there’s one more day and Brazil Ride only ends when we cross the finish line in the last stage", said Isabella.

Kraft felt bad and is in hospital in Porto Seguro - Ivonne Kraft, five time Brasil Ride Champion, felt bad on km 6 of the Cross Country Circuit this morning and was taken by helicopter, to Luis Eduardo Magalhaez Hospital, in Porto Seguro. She was found 15 metres from the trail, in the shade and trying to recover. She was quickly attended to by a Race Doctor, Clemar Correa da Silva, neuro-surgeon from Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo and who is considered one of the most experienced in sports competitions in the country. According to the Doctor, Ivonne is under observation and her condition is stable.

Memorable evening - The story of a couple of athletes who are competing in the seventh edition of Brasil Ride, one in the Open Category and the other the Ladies, has made the main MTB competition of the Americas a great matchmaker! It was in 2012 that Alexa Claudia Diekhaus met the already famous cyclist Rosinha. But Alexa only knew Rosinha as Edicarlos Oliveira da Silva, a man who she would fall in love with one day in the 2013 edition of the competition. She traveled to Bahia in her car with race partner Rachel Gontijo, and happened to give a Rosinha and Thiago Drews Elijah the Brou a ride.

"I lived in Rezende city when I moved to Brazil and saw Rosinha in the 2012 Brasil Ride. I'd heard of him because he’s a well-known athlete, but I only saw him from afar that time. After he took a ride in my car in 2013 we became friends and then he said that he’d liked me since he saw me in 2012. I wasn’t charmed by the cyclist or the reputation, but the person. You can’t explain it, but we’ve always felt very good together " Alexa told. "I moved to Belo Horizonte in early 2015, a city that he lived in, to move in together", she added.

"Mario Roma told me at the beginning of the week that this would be a surprise in the race. When the video crew filmed me on Thursday, I was curious. I was suspicious of something. At the time of the marriage proposal on stage, my heart raced and time went so slowly. We’ve been together every day, but when you get a proposal to marry someone you love, it’s something that makes you a very happy person. It was a very special day in my life", reported Alexa.

The idea of asking Alexa to marry Rosinha came earlier this year, in a conversation with the founder of Brasil Ride. "I spoke with Mario Roma who wanted me to ask her to marry me during Brasil Ride, he soon agreed, and offered himself to be the best man, as well as giving the bride an invite to the race. That's how it happened. It seemed like the start of a race, my heart was pumping. It was really cool and interesting the way I wanted to propose to her", said Rosinha, cyclist for 17 years, and owner of Rosinha Bike Workshop.

Main results - The fights for the titles of the other categories were also intense, with the race for the Male Americas champions shirt in the balance. Sherman Trezza and Wolfgang Soares continue in the lead, now with a 58 second advantage over Ricardo Pscheidt (BRA) and José Montoya (CRI). In the Masters category, the lead of Bart Brentjens and Abraão Azevedo increased from 3h10 to 4h 10 minutes. In the Mixed Category, the Italian Piero Pellegrini and Annabella Stropparo added 22 minutes to their lead, from 1h 22 minutes to 1h 44 minutes.

Last stage - The seventh stage of Brazil Ride closes with a Golden Key 2016 edition, the day that 1,000 athletes from Marathon XCM Brazil Ride join the 500 ultramarathon cyclists. The ultramarathon cyclists start the final stage of Brasil Ride at 9 o'clock and 15 minutes after the marathon cyclists will take on the Brasil Ride challenge. If the city of Arraial d'Ajuda had already been taken over by bicycles, this weekend promises even more crowded streets. The 75 km route will be cycled by the best riders in the world and have an accumulated ascent of 1,105 meters, between Arraial and Trancoso. The highlight of the day will be riding high on the cliffs of the local area with the deep blue sea as a backdrop, a unique setting in ultramarathon racing.
