Trek San Marco duo wins another stage in Brasil Ride, and increases the gap

The third day of the main MTB competition of the Americas, held in Guaratinga, was the first of the two Queen stages of the race

Guaratinga (BA) - The seventh edition of Brasil Ride, the largest MTB Marathon of the Americas, approaches its half with an intense dispute among the best riders in the world. On the third day, athletes faced the first of two Queen stages, with 92.1 Km and 2,894 meters of elevation gain. The highlight of the day was Trek San Marco II duo - Fabian Rabensteiner (ITA) and Alexey Medvedev (RUS), which recovered from a mechanical problem to win the third stage in 4h30min33. Less than two minutes after, Daniel Geismayr (AUT) and Joachen Jab (GER) arrived, with 4h32min11. Tiago Ferreira (POR) and Roel Paulissen (BEL) completed the podium in 4h35min37.

Italian Fabian Rabensteiner and Russian Alexey Medvedev proved why they are being pointed as the favorites to win the title, with two victories and a place in the podium everyday. After having problems with his derailleur near Km 30, Rabensteiner and his partner lost nearly three minutes to their competitors, and then moved on to chase the leaders Geismayr and Jab. In the end they added five minutes to the gap over Ferreira and Paulissen on the GC, after three stages.

"The day was not as hot as the previous ones, but it was damp. The stage was not as long as the second, but it was hard because of the very steep climbs. There were many technical singletracks, and I like it", said Alexey.

The second place of the stage put Centurion Vaude duo - Daniel Geismayer and Joachen Jab - in the dispute for the win. This is something very special for Geismayr, who was very close to the title with Herman Pernsteiner in 2015, but his partner had an accident a few months before Brasil Ride 2016. "It was a very good day, because we were fast. In the prologue and during the second day our legs were still not very good, due to the jetlag. It's a very good sensation being in the fight for the title", analyzed Geismayr.

Tiago Ferreira, current MTB Marathon world champion, talked about the difficulties of the day. Even not doing so well, Paulissen and Ferreira are still in the second place. "It was a very complicated day today. The stage was hard, making us push the bike in certain moments, because the uphills were too steep. But we still have a lot ahead of us. Let's see the next ones", said the athlete.

Master - In the Master category, Bart Brentjens and Abraão Azevedo once again showed their superiority among the athletes between 40-49 years old, with their third consecutive win. "There were many steep uphills, difficult to ride. The singletracks were cool, very hard, just as a stage race must be", highlighted Brentjens.

A Italian cycling family - While the Mixed category duo, Italians Piero Pellegrini and Annabella Stropparo race on the trails of Guaratinga or Arraial d'Ajuda, where they compete for the fifth time, little Victoria, who is mere 7 years old, waits for her parents, who are on the lead in the seventh edition. This is the third time she comes with her parents in this journey. "It is very good to have our daughter here. It is a great experience for her, she can see beautiful places and meet great people", tells Piero. "It's so cool to be with the whole family here again. This is her first time camping, and each moment in the tent is new and fun. I'm very glad for her opportunity", said Annabella.

In the last five years, the couple didn't compete together in just one opportunity. After a not very good race in 2015, Annabella decided to come back to the competitions with her husband, like in the previous years. "I prefer to race with my wife. She has been a professional athlete for a long time, while I have never been a professional, despite riding for 28 years. We share this passion for cycling, and in cycling I met her, even if for me this is just a hobby", remembers 50 year old Piero. The duo won the three stages so far, and are very close to winning the title.

At 48 years old, the Italian lady who won 17 Italian championships (three Marathons, seven cross country and another seven cyclocross), was the best among women, with a gap over 30 minutes ahead of the first Ladies duo of the day - Ivonne Kraft (GER) and Celina Carpinteiro (POR). "I'm so tired after such an intense stage, that I can't say if I'm happy or not. But it is a very good feeling to do so well in such a nice race like Brasil Ride, and being the best among the women", completed Stropparo.
