The fifth of seven stages of the Brasil Ride 2019 was held on Thursday (24) and had an exciting dispute for the victory at the finish line, after 140 km. Best for Tiago Ferreira (POR) and Hans Becking (NLD), owners of the yellow shirt, who won and maintained the lead with a good gap. The DMT Racing Team duo beat Henrique Avancini and Manuel Fumic (GER) in the final sprint, keeping about eight minutes ahead of Cannondale Factory Racing XC's German-Brazilian partnership. Czechs Kristian Hynek and Martin Stosek, from Vitalo Future Cycling Pwd by Canon finished third, also competing hand-in-hand with fellow countrymen Jaroslav Kulhavy and Matous Ulman from Specialized Racing. The stage back to Arraial d'Ajuda, in Porto Seguro (BA), after three nights at the camp in Vila Brasil Ride, in Guaratinga (BA), had Henrique Avancini and Manuel Fumic attacking in the first half of the stage, trying to close the 7min47 gap to Tiago Ferreira and Hans Becking, opening up about 30 seconds ahead of the opponents. At the assistance point 3, after 74 km, Avancini and Fumic were reached by Ferreira and Fumic, Kristian Hynek and Martin Stosek, and Jaroslav Kulhavy and Matous Ulman. "This stage became tough because in the middle of the day it started to rain and the terrain changed. It was difficult and fast, since Avancini and Fumic started to work very early, maintaining a very fast pace, especially in the first 50 km. They worked all day and it was very exhausting. The important thing is that it was another no-wasted-time day. We aready know that this Friday (25) will be the most complicated day for us, so let's calm down", commented Ferreira. "The return to Arraial started off hard, but it was impossible for any duo to open a gap big enough to lead with a slack. We rode to secure the yellow shirt and made it. It was a matter of honor for us to win this stage because we had a difficult and interesting battle against the Cannondale cyclists. We are happy with the win. Tomorrow we have the cross country, and it will be a stage to not waste much time, save our equipment and prevent falls," said Becking. Three-time Brazil Ride champion Henrique Avancini evaluated their performance at the stage. "It was a long day, as we expected. We attacked hard until km 50, opening a small gap, but it was never decisive. Then we had the most fluid part of the race, but in km 68 Manuel had a flat front tire, and it was a very complicated situation, because the three duos escaped and we spent a lot of energy to reach them. We managed, and in the end we saved energy, even though we wanted to win. Manuel crossed wheels with Tiago at the end of the last climb and lost contact, but he came back and we lost by half a wheel. A tight sprint. We put them under pressure, but it was hard to buy time. We have two days and we go after it," said Avancini. The fifth stage turned out to be special for Kristian Hynek, the two-time 2010/2011 ultramarathon champion, for securing his first podium in the tenth edition. "A super hard and long stage. Obviously it's good to be in the top 3, because from the start we didn't have good legs, or at least what we expected, physically, to compete for the top of the overall standings. I must say that after all the suffering of the last days, we are super happy with the podium. We hope to survive the remaining two stages and maybe climb and enjoy the race," said Hynek. Women’s Elite - Among women, the story was the same as the other stages: the leader duo from the previous day could not keep the orange jersey. After Leticia Cândido and Hercília Najara (Corinthians Audax / Tripp Aventura) leading in the first day, and Jaqueline Mourão and Danilas Ferreira (Sense Factory Racing / Tropix Brazil) on stages 2 and 4, this time was Viviane Favery and Tânia Clair Picker (Cannondale Brasil Racing / Soul Cycles) regain the lead they had after the third of seven stages. Sixth stage - Cross country stage, with athletes organized into two heats: first the elite athletes, with the 60 best duos, then the second heat with the other athletes. In each heat, the course is 8.1 km but the duos have to go 4 laps, totaling 32.4 km. On this stage, especially, the duos do not need to follow the rule of riding together all the time. On other days the duos cannot stay more than 2 minutes away from each other. Each one by themselves, and in the end, their time is added and the average counts for the classification. A stage with 90% single tracks and technical sections, with few possibilities of passing. A section of Atlantic Forest with roots on the ground, drops and climbs that are short, but very difficult to clear. Start and finish will take place at Uiki Parracho, and the athletes ride inside the Uiki. This is the recommended point for watching.
