Tiago Ferreira and Roel Paulissen win the stage between Arraial d'Ajuda and Guaratinga

Fabian Rabensteiner and Alexey Medvedev are still wearing the Open category leader jersey on Monday. In the Master category, Bart Brentjens and Abraão Azevedo win again, while Ivonne Kraft and Celina Carpinteiro take the lead in the Ladies category.

Guaratinga (BA) - The best riders of the world of mountain biking completed this Monday (17), one of the longest stages of Brazil Ride, the second of seven stages in the main ultramarathon of the Americas, with 128 km and 2,225 meters of elevation gain, between Arraial d'Ajuda, and the Conjunto Boa Vista farm, in Guaratinga. For the first time a sports competition was realized passing through the National Park Pau Brasil. Current world champion, Tiago Ferreira (POR), and his partner Roel Paulissen (BEL), world champion in 2008 and 2009 were the day's best with just over a minute of advantage over Fabian Rabensteiner (ITA) and Alexey Medvedev (RUS), the owners of the Yellow Jersey. Hugo Prado (BRA) and Lukas Kaufmann (SUI) repeated the third place in the prologue, and rank again among the first in general.

Tiago Ferreira and Roel Paulissen set the pace right from the start, and gradually the peloton decreasied in volume, until they were left with Rabensteiner and Medvedev, Prado and Kaufmann, as well as the current two-time champions of the event, Jiri Novak and Hans Becking. Near Km 100, where sequences of climbs near Guaratinga begain, the group splitted, with Ferreira and Paulissen in front, to complete the 128 km in 4h48min08.

"Early in, Luis Pinto started on a high pace, which made several opponents drop out of the fight for the win. Shortly after km 90, we reached the climbs, our favorite ground. I could see that some athletes did not react well in this part of the circuit, but we kept our effort, never leaving the comfort zone. In the final five kilometers I noticed that we were isolated, and I asked Roel to push a little harder, in order to not lose this win", said Ferreira.

It was a really warm day and pretty tatic in the beging. Many people togheter. We havd some problems with the water on the track and we had some crashes. Me too, but not so bad. Everybody stayed togheter untill Km 97, when we got to the trail. Then we split up a litle bit. Later came always steep and steep climbs. Not long, but steep and after hours in the heat you feel it. At a certain moment, I was behind Tiago, but in the end we could speed up and we let the guys behind us", highlighted Paulissen.

Even being sedond in the day, leader duo from Trek San Marco II celebrated their place on the podium, with a time of 4h49min13. "Today was very long and hot. Tiago and Roel in the last quilometers were faster than us, and Alexey didn't felt good to follow them. He had a little problem in his stomach. We stayed strong and could go until the end, to stay with the leader jersey. We are happy with the result.", evaluated Itlian Fabian Rabensteiner.

Third place of the day, Hugo Prado and Lukas Kaufmann completed the podium with a time of 4h51min39, which gives them the third overall of the Open. The duos Jiri Novak (CZE) / Hans Becking (NED), and Daniel Geismayr (AUT) / Jochen Kaess (GER) completed the fourth and fifth places, respectively. Wolfgang Krenn (AUT) / Fojtik Ondrej (CZE) placed 6th.

Leadership maintained in Master - The favorites for their fourth consecutive title, Bart Brentjens (HOL) and Abraão Azevedo (BRA) guaranteed another win in Master category, over 21 minutes ahead of Alcir Masetti (BRA) and Maurício Salgado (BRA). "Actualy I expected what the organizers said, a easy stage, but it was hard. It was fast in the begining and the water made it even more difficult, and with the heat... even harder. I didn't expect it would be so hard, and because of the mindset that I had in the beginning of the day, it was even harder.", said Brentjens.

Orange jersey has new owners - After Isabella Lacerda (BRA) and Leticia Cândido's (BRA) start ahead of the Ladies category during the prologue, Ivonne Kraft (GER) and Celina Carpinteiro (POR) pushed hard and won the stage over 45 minutes ahead of the Brazilian duo. The feeling with Celina was great, it was very good but very hot and we both suffered. The course was very hard, and we cought the leading jersey and the first place. We took our own pace racing with some groups during the first quilometers. At the end, we have this beautifull jersey. We are very happy, because we have fun togheter, and we know each other e know how to respect each other", celebrated Ivonne. "We were faster in single track and the boys weres faster in the flat parts. So they always pass us and we catch them.", finished the German.
